What are the differences between Apple Pencils?

The Apple Pencil (1st generation), introduced in 2015, was Apple’s first stylus designed for the iPad. It features a cylindrical design with a glossy finish and connects to the iPad via Bluetooth. Charging is done through a Lightning connector located under a removable cap on the end of the Pencil. This model does not have any additional buttons or touch-sensitive areas, and it is compatible with earlier iPad models.

The Apple Pencil (2nd generation), released in 2018, brought significant upgrades. It has a more streamlined design with a matte finish and a flat side, making it easier to grip. This version introduced wireless charging, which occurs magnetically when attached to the side of a compatible iPad Pro. The 2nd generation Pencil also features a touch-sensitive area that allows users to double-tap to switch tools or perform other customizable actions, enhancing its functionality.

The Apple Pencil (USB-C), launched in 2023, offers a mid-range option between the first and second generations. It features a similar design to the 1st generation but with a matte finish and a USB-C port for charging and pairing, located under a sliding cap at the end. This model supports hover features and magnetic attachment, but does not include wireless charging or the customizable double-tap feature. It’s designed to be more affordable while still offering advanced features for modern iPad users.

Lastly, the Apple Pencil Pro, launched in 2024, builds upon the strengths of the 2nd generation Apple Pencil, introducing even more advanced features such as haptic feedback, Barrel roll to change orientation of the pen, and Squeeze to switch tools, lines weights, and colors. The Pro also supports Apple’s Find My feature.
