How To Stop Worrying And Learn To Love SSDs
The Register’s Andrew Orlowski cites an account from a reader who has taken the SSD plunge and discovered that in 20 years of performance bumps and enhancements nothing has ever made as dramatic a difference as the SSD.
The article notes that Apple has consistently moved to moved more demanding versions of its OS, but has chronically underspecified the amount of RAM it ships with its systems shipping by default, address of which has often proved a realtively simple and inexpensive solution to performance issues, but observes that this time-honoured performance enhancer is no longer an option on many ultraportables, including the MacBook Air other than specifying a 4 GB RAM spec. at the time of manufacture.
However, with modern OS versions tending to access the hard disk frequently the SSD’s speed advantage is even more critical, and is now the most potent system hotrodding tweak you can invest in, notwithstanding a probable shorter service life than with conventional hard disk drives.
