Announcement Of New iPhones (And, Possibly… More?) Anticipated At September 7th ‘Far Out.’ Apple Event

NEWS – Apple is just 48 hours (give or take) away from taking the wraps off of its latest products.

An Apple Event — with the tagline, “Far Out.” (as indicated on the invite sent out to the media) — has been scheduled for 10:00 AM (PDT) on September 7 at Apple Park in Cupertino, California. While guests have been invited to attend in-person, the keynote address and accompanying announcements will not be live but pre-recorded (which has been the case since 2020 due to the global pandemic).

According to a report from CNBC, Apple is expected to release four new models of the iPhone at the event, likely to be the iPhone 14.

iPhone 14 Rumors (Or… Spoilers?)

Business Insider reported that — in addition to the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max — Apple might introduce a new model, an “iPhone 14 Max” (or, is it “ iPhone 14 Plus“?) with a larger 6.7-inch screen (an iPhone 14 mini is not expected to be released with this year’s iPhone lineup).

Based on rumors, the Pro-branded iPhones are expected to get the majority of the upgrades. Design-wise, per Business Insider, Apple supposedly will be getting rid of the notch in the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, replacing it with a pill-shaped cutout where the Face ID and selfie camera will be housed.

Business Insider also noted in its report that only the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will have an upgraded processor, likely to be the new A16 chip (the iPhone 14 and “iPhone 14 Max” will come with the same A15 processors found in last year’s iPhone lineup).

In addition to a new A16 chip, Macworld reported that the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max also will feature an always-on display as well as an upgraded camera with 48MP (4x that of the 12MP one found on the iPhone 13). Additionally, the Pro-branded iPhones will sport a slew of other upgrades which haven’t received as much attention like fast(er) charging capabilities, extreme battery life, and a 2TB storage capacity (last year’s iPhone lineup topped out at 1TB).

Reportedly, per Macworld, there also will be a new iridescent color option which features a sheen that changes its hue depending on the light.

On other rumored features possibly coming to the iPhone 14 as suggested by clues in the invite for the event? According to a report from Cult of Mac, the starry Apple logo (as seen in the photograph above) is a clue that the device’s upgraded camera will have a new astrophotography mode, noting that there have been rumors for years of the iPhone getting a dedicated function for taking photographs of the stars and other celestial objects (e.g., the moon).

Referring to the upgraded camera expected on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, Business Insider noted in its report that the inclusion of a larger sensor on the Pro-branded iPhones suggests that it will allow for better photography performance in low light conditions.

Another possibility suggested by the invite for the event, per Cult of Mac, hints at the iPhone 14 featuring satellite communication. Last year, reliable sources claimed that future Apple smartphones will be able to exchange texts — and (possibly) phone calls, too — with satellites which would allow iPhone users to reach out for assistance in emergency situations in places where cellular service is not available.

In an article on what to expect at the Apple Event on September 7, TechCrunch reported that there often is a hidden meaning included in the artwork — which it described as, “a galaxy formed into the Apple logo” — and speculation has been running rampant ever since the invite for the event was sent out to the media last month (as illustrated in the report from Cult of Mac).

Besides the iPhone 14, CNBC reported that Apple also could announce new models of the Apple Watch including AirPods, too, at the event. The company is reportedly preparing updated Macs and iPads as well, but those are expected to be announced at a separate Apple Event (usually in October or November).

Finally, per CNBC, Apple also is expected to release the next version of its mobile operating system: iOS 16 (something the company usually does whenever new models of the iPhone are announced).

The “Far Out.” Apple Event starts at 10:00 AM (PDT) on September 7. The event will be streamed online and can be viewed at apple.com, via Apple’s official channel on YouTube, or by using the Apple TV app.
