A New Summer Convertible? – Lenovo’s ThinkPad Helix Ultrabook

A laptop/tablet convertible hybrid is a computer configuration your editor would probably buy if Apple offered one supporting OS X. A convertible form factor also makes touchscreen screens in laptops reasonable.

The Register’s Bob Dormon notes that Lenovo’s ThinkPad Helix convertible Ultrabook takes the convertible tablet-cum-keyboard pioneered in Lenovo’s contortionist Yoga notebook to the next level, going for full separation and powered by a, Ivy Bridge 2GHz Intel Core i7-3667U vPro CPU and an Intel HD 4000 integrated GPU with 8GB of DDR3L 1333MHz SDRAM and the review unit had a 256GB Toshiba SSD. The 11.6in offers full HD resolution.

Downsides are that the Helix is a tad porky for an UltraBook, and it’s expensive. Also, it’s using last year’s silicon, and doesn’t have a backlit keyboard. So the operative question is “just how badly do you need a convertible with an 11in screen?”
