PC Market Hopes To Rebound From Disappointing 2012

In a IHS iSuppli Compute Electronics Market Tracker report, Craig Stice notes that looking back at 2012, the PC Industry went through a pivotal year, and now, as we move into 2013 and beyond the question becomes, “which way did it pivot”?

Stice observes in the report abstract that 2012 was a year that brought Ultrabooks, and Ultrathins to mainstream and to what had become a stagnant PC industry with regards to innovation, and the hope was that the release of Microsoft’s Windows 8 incorporating new consumer-friendly features and tablet compatibility, would help spark the PC market.

He says 2013 brings again a year of hope for the PC market with Windows 8 in full launch, pricing of ultrathin laptops expected to continue to decline and the new convertibles and tablet PCs (x86 based) gaining traction in the mainstream. However, with the total PC market declining in 2012 for the first time since 2001, the bar has been set pretty low for 2013 to shine, and Stice says IHS iSuppli remains cautiously optimistic that advances in the mobile PC market will help compensate for weakness in other PC categories such as declining desktops and netbooks.
