OS X Mountain Lion Update v10.8.1: Downloading And Installing

Thursday afternoon Apple released OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion’s first point update.

The OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.1 Update is recommended for all Mountain Lion users and includes general operating system fixes that improve the stability and compatibility of your Mac, including fixes that:
• Resolve an issue that may cause Migration Assistant to unexpectedly quit
• Improve compatibility when connecting to a Microsoft Exchange server in Mail
• Address an issue playing audio through a Thunderbolt display
• Resolve an issue that could prevent iMessages from being sent
• Address an issue that could cause the system to become unresponsive when using Pinyin input
• Resolve an issue when connecting to SMB servers with long names
• Address a issue that may prevent Safari from launching when using a Proxy Automatic Configuration (PAC) file
• Improve 802.1X authentication with Active Directory credentials.

As usual with these upgrades, you can install via Software Update, or download a freestanding installer (virtually always your editor’s preferred method).

For the Software Update mode, Choose Apple menu > Software Update to check for the latest Apple software via the Mac App Store, including this update. Other software updates available for your computer may also appear, which Apple recommends that you install. Note that an update’s size may vary from computer-to-computer when installed using Software Update. Also, some updates must be installed prior to others.

Downloading the manual update installer is a safer way to proceed, and an especially useful option when you need to update multiple computers but only want to download the update once. The standalone installers are available from Apple Support Downloads.
