The Phoenix Rises: Modbook Pro – Worlds Most Powerful and Largest-Screen Tablet Computer
Modbook Inc., a privately held creative technologies developer that pioneered the Mac OS tablet computer market in the mid to late ’00s, has announced its new product, the Modbook Pro, a highly portable 13.3-inch MacBook-based pen tablet computer. Available with up to a 2.9GHz processor, the Modbook Pro is claimed to be the worlds most powerful and largest-screen tablet computer, and will begin shipping in the United States in early fall.
Like its predecessor, the award-winning Modbook, the Modbook Pro is an innovative computer modification product whose enclosure conversion kit incorporates and completely encases the original hardware of a new Apple MacBook Pro 13.3-inch base system running OS X Mountain Lion. In addition, the Modbook Pro contains a state-of-the-art digitizer from the industry leader in pen tablet technology, Wacom, offering 512 levels of pen pressure sensitivity – claimed to be more than any other tablet computer on the market, a recognition rate of 133 points per second, and a recognition resolution of approximately one one-hundredth of a millimeter. The Modbook Pro’s pen interface features tough and scratch-resistant ForceGlass, providing an etched, paper-emulating drawing and writing surface.
“We can’t wait to get the Modbook Pro into the hands of the users we developed it for,” says Andreas E. Haas, Modbook Inc.’s chief executive officer and chief technology officer. “In terms of its design and engineering, the Modbook Pro is not an incremental step, but a leaps-and-bounds advance over the Modbook. Its sheer power makes it a lot of fun to use.”
Sturdy and portable, the Modbook Pro has a claimed to be strongest-in-class enclosure and lightweight internal core made of aircraft-grade, precision-machined aluminum. Unlike plug-in pen tablet displays, the Modbook Pro is a complete all-in-one computer that can easily be slipped in and out of a backpack and used anywhere (up to seven hours on a single charge) without cables, display adapters or breakout boxes. Its sloped-edge shape and 3D-GripFeet allow it to be propped up to 50 degrees on all sides without slipping.
With those 512 pen pressure levels, the pen tablet system facilitates extremely precise control of renderings. Included with the Modbook Pro is a digitizer pen with two programmable side buttons and digital eraser. The pen is securely stowed in the built-in, magnetic catch-equipped pen garage.
The Modbook Pro’s 13.3-inch (diagonal) display has the 13-inch MacBook Pro’s native 1280 by 800 pixel resolution. The display, digitizer and ForceGlass screen assembly are flush-mounted, resulting in a completely level drawing and writing surface that maximizes on-screen workspace.
To accomplish the inclusion of the MacBook Pro base systems hardware, the Modbook Pro employs a unique ExoConnect system. ExoConnect links the Modbook Pro components to the base system via one of its two external USB ports the connection and the port itself are permanently sealed within the Modbook Pro, leaving all the other ports on the input/output panel unobstructed. In essence a fully standards-compliant USB device, the Modbook Pro closely follows the Apple Design Guidelines for USB high-performance peripherals.
The Modbook Pro’s configurable base system includes a 2.5GHz dual core Intel Core i5 processor or 2.9GHz dual core Intel Core i7 processor, up to 16GB of RAM, a 2.5inch SATA drive (up to 1TB HDD or up to 960GB SSD), an 8X SuperDrive DVD burner, an Intel HD Graphics 4000 chipset, 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 wireless connectivity capability, a built-in 63.5-watt-hour lithium-polymer battery and a 60W MagSafe power adapter.
In addition to the MagSafe power port, the Modbook Pro’s base system has one Gigabit Ethernet port, one FireWire 800 port, one (available) USB 3.0 port, one Thunderbolt port, one SDXC card slot and one audio line in/out.
OS X and Windows 7
Users can enjoy the full range of Mac applications on the Modbook Pro, and can also utilize OS X’s Boot Camp application to install 32-bit or 64-bit Microsoft Windows 7 to turn their Modbook Pro into a tablet PC.
The Modbook Pro is the only tablet computer with the ability to boot into both OS X and Windows 7, unlocking another world of available applications on either platform: Adobe Photoshop, Encore and Premiere Pro; Autodesk Sketchbook Pro and AutoCAD; Apple Aperture and Logic Pro; Corel Painter; and many others. No matter what project or requirement, the Modbook Pros unique cross-platform capability together with its powerful pen tablet features enable the soup-to-nuts creation of high-resolution, pro-quality creative deliverables.
The Modbook Pro comes with a one-year warranty covering the complete hardware solution, including all of the components of the MacBook Pro base system. Users will be able to have their Modbook Pro serviced at authorized service centers, the first of which will be announced prior to the Modbook Pros ship date.
Pricing for the Modbook Pro will be announced in the coming weeks, along with authorized sales partners for the Modbook Pro. Select sales partners will begin taking pre-orders at that time, allowing customers to secure a place in line when the Modbook Pro begins shipping in early fall.
Notes:
Construction of the Modbook Pro requires permanent removal of the base systems enclosure, including the display (with the FaceTime camera) and the keyboard/trackpad assembly. Hard drive, RAM and other configuration options vary and may only be available from specific sales partners.
The Modbook Pro is an enclosure conversion kit designed to exclusively contain an original MacBook Pro base system. Apple Inc.s one-year limited warranty on the base system is voided by the conversion and replaced with Modbook Inc.s warranty.
