Clambook Turns Smartphone Into Laptop Substitute

There are plenty of iPad cases that transform Apple’s tablet computer into a laptop substitute, sort of, although you’re still stuck with the shortcomings of the touchscreen for pointing and clicking.

However, the Clambook from Clamcase, projected for release in time for the winter holiday season, promises to do the same with an Android or iPhone smartphone, which becomes the computing power behind a 16:9 laptop display and full-size keyboard while running cooler than a laptop with much slower battery drain, allowing for longer intervals betweeen recharges.

Unfortunately for iPhone fans, the Clambook appears, based on the as yet pretty minimalist product site, to be principally oriented and optimized toward supporting Android 4.0 “Ice Cream Sandwich” smartphones, with iPhone support evidently something of a tacked-on afterthought.

Still it’s another interesting play on a concept pioneered by Apple 20 years ago with its Duo dockable notebooks.
