New iPad? – Charles Moore’s Picks For The 16 Best Free iPad Apps – The ‘Book Mystique
New iPad? – Charles Moore’s Picks For The 16 Best Free iPad Apps – The ‘Book Mystique
Did you get a new iPad for Christmas? A week and a half in, you’re probably getting the hang of using the tablet, and indeed even becoming a bit addicted, but there’s lots more to discover in the incredible array of iOS apps, many of them free.
After a bit more than half a year on my own iPad 2, I’m still discovering cool new apps almost every day. The big problem is finding the time to make use of them, one reason why a major focus for me is finding app tools that help me save time and boost efficiency. But whatever your use orientation, you can doubtless find a kid-in-a-candy-store selection of iOS apps to suit your fancy. Here are my current 16 favorite free ones. Why 16? That’s just the way it turned out – I had to count.

Dropbox
I don’t know how I ever managed without Dropbox. I work on three Mac laptops, plus my iPad, and Dropbox keep works-in-progress synced among them as well as being the slickest, easiest way to transfer files among them.
Well, actually before Dropbox, my file transfer and synchronization method for work in progress was to either compress and email the files to myself, then download them to the other computer(s), or, if no Internet access was available, or the files were large, I’d use a USB flash drive. Both methods work. The Flash drive method of course was useless for the iPad, and neither is as quick, slick, or efficient as Dropbox, which intelligently syncs only the parts of a file that have ben modified (not the whole thing).
Dropbox is a free service up to 2 GB maximum before fees are imposed. After you install Dropbox on your computer, any file you save to your Dropbox Folder will automatically save to all your computers, your iPad, iPhone, and even the Dropbox website. With the Dropbox app, you can take everything that matters to you on the go.
Read your docs or flip through your albums when you’re out and about. Save photos or videos to your Dropbox and share them with friends in just a couple taps. Even if you lose your computer or it gets damaged, your stuff is safe on Dropbox.
You simply store anything you want synced in a Dropbox folder, and the rest is handed automatically, with file edits and additions updated live.
As noted, Dropbox is free up to 2 GB of data. To sign up, just go to: http://www.dropbox.com, download the Dropbox software (supports iOS and Mac OS X 10.4 on up). Drag the app to your Applications folder, open it, and you’re in business.
There are two default Dropbox folders: Photos, and Public, the latter which allows you to drop any file into it and receive a URL that you can forward so other people can access and download the folder contents even if they don’t have their own Dropbox account.
Dropbox is the quintessence of how the Cloud should work.
Macworld staff editor Serenity Caldwell recently posted a Macworld Video tip explaining how to set up a Dropbox account.

PlainText – Dropbox Text Editing
A perfect companion app for Dropbox for editing text on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch. PlainText features:
FOLDERS keep your documents organized.
PAPER-LIKE INTERFACE keeps the focus on your text.

Google Search For iPad
Google’s excellent Chrome Web browser, one of my productivity suite mainstays on the Mac, is not available for iOS devices, but in some respects Google Search for iOS, recently completely redesigned and optimized for the iPad, is even better. It’s definitely my go-to app when I need to look something up in a hurry.
Google Search for iOS is just outstanding — a lovely piece of work, obviously tailored and carefully optimized for the iOS, working with the same speediness, fluidity and smoothness I’ve come to expect from the Chrome browser for OS X. It’s not quite Chrome for iOS, but in some respects it’s even better. For one thing, one-click ease of machine translation for other language Web pages is there. Cool!
Within its capabilities, Google Search for iOS lets you search the web faster, easier, and more efficiently than with a regular Web browser. How so?
Google Search displays search results and websites side-by-side so you can quickly browse pages and results, and lets you wipe through its image carousel to see image results in full-size. You can also compare search results as webpage snapshots in Instant Previews mode, and use Google Instant and search suggestions to find you desired search results faster. Revisiting past searches is facilitated with Visual Search History, and you can highlight what you want to see on a webpage with the app’s new Find button, easily share pages and +1 sites, and have quick access to other Google apps like Gmail, Calendar, Docs and more
Google Search also supports Voice Search, allowing users to search by voice and skip the typing, and Google Goggles that lets you snap a photo of what you see to find more information about products, landmarks or famous paintings, or even solve Sudoku puzzles. The handy Search Nearby feature finds places near you without typing your location.
Google Search for iOS works with iPhone and iPod touch as well as iPad, and requires iOS 4.0 or later.

Dragon Dictation By Nuance Communications
Dragon Dictation is an easy-to-use voice recognition application powered by Dragon NaturallySpeaking that allows you to easily speak and instantly see your text or email messages.
I had initially figured Dragon Dictate would probably be more like a party trick performance-wise than a seriously useful tool, but not so! In fact, it’s so good that I now use it nearly as much as I do the full-featured Dragon Dictate 2.5 application on my MacBook.
Dragon Dictation’s Dragon NaturallySpeaking engine allows you to easily speak and view text content for everything from email messages to blog posts and other long form composition on your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. Nuance claims using Dragon Dictation 2.0 is up to five times faster than typing on the idevice’s keyboard, which I wouldn’t dispute. I appreciate that the software keyboard is probably the best compromise for a handheld device, but it’s a clumsy place to type.
With Dragon Dictation you can also dictate status updates directly to your Social Networking applications (Facebook and Twitter) or send notes and reminders to yourself all using your voice. So when you’re on-the-go, stop typing and start speaking from short text messages to longer email messages, and anything in between.
To compose a message or passage of prose on your idevice, launch the Dragon Dictation application. Tap the red recording button that appears in the middle of the screen to initiate the voice recognition process, and while the application is recording, speak your message.
Dragon Dictation supports a multitude of global languages. For a full list of currently supported languages visit:

Requires iOS 4.0 or later.

Flipboard: Flipboard assembles content on your iPad or iPhone from sources you choose — including major magazines, your Facebook and Twitter feeds, and an assortment of curators — into a single, easy-to-browse interface.
Designed from the ground up for iPad, Flipboard creates a magazine out of a user’s social content. Simply launch Flipboard and open the cover to get started. From the Table of Contents you can view your sections and personalize the magazine.
The Facebook and Twitter sections let readers quickly flip through the latest stories, photos and updates from friends and trusted sources. Flipboard also lets readers easily create sections around topics or people they care about. Choose from Flipboard’s suggested sections on topics such as sports, news, tech and style, with content hand-curated from popular and interesting Twitter feeds. Or, create an entirely new section by searching by topic, person or Twitter list to make Flipboard even more personal.

Browsers
To be fair, relatively speaking, the iOS version of Safari holds up a lot better in comparison with other Web browsers that support the iOS, like Opera Mini, Dolphin, Diigo, Terra, Mercury, and more than does regular Safari for iOS against the competition. Actually, I would rate Safari at or near the top of the iOS pack along with Dolphin, Diigo, and Terra, especially now that the iOS 5 version has real tabs. On the other hand, while I much prefer Opera to Safari in their respective OS X versions, Opera Mini on the iPad has been a disappointment, with a clunky user interface and distinctly less lively performance than iOS Safari, Diigo, and the very speedy Dolphin especially. These are all pretty good Web browsers.
___
Dolphin Browser HD
Dolphin Browser claims over 10,000,000 total downloads, has been rated #2 on CNET’s 100, and #1 in PC Mag’s “The 40 Best Free Apps for 2011” In my seat of the pants estimation, Dolphin HD is probably the fastest iOS browser, although it’s not necessarily faster than Google Search.
My most disliked Dolphin HD aspect is that on my poor 16 GB iPad 2, where I tend to keep a couple of dozen apps open, Dolphin tends to dump loaded Web page content when it’s running in the background. However page restorations are fast, as long as there aren’t too many. I haven’t found this an issue with other iOS browsers.
Features:
Webzine – Fast loading, without ads; Webzine simplifies the way you read your favorite news, blogs and websites.
Gesture – Let your inner artist out and create a personal symbol to access the websites you use the most.
Speed Dial – Visit you favorite sites on the go with one touch.
Tabbed browsing – No need to toggle between screens, tabbed browsing lets you open and switch between pages fast as lightening.
SideBars – Make the best of mobile interface via Dolphin SideBars.
Bookmarks Bar -The fastest way to customize your desktop.
Full Screen Mode – Browse without clutter by switching easily to full screen mode.
New In Version 2.0
1. Dolphin Connect – Sync your bookmarks across your iPhone, iPad or Android devices with a Dolphin ID.
2. Now get up to 24 Webzine columns on your homepage.
3. Access the left and right Sidebar by swiping at edge of screen to facilitate easier browsing when zoomed in.

Diigo Browser – Chrome-Like, With Annotation And Offline Reading

Opera Mini Web Browser
As noted, Opera MIni is not my favorite alternative iOS browser, which was a surprise, because its big sibling, Opera for OS X, in many respects is my favorite OS X browser. Go figure.
However, Opera Mini does have one unique advantage — compression. Handy for times times you find yourself on a slow, crowded network, away from Wi-Fi or when data roaming. Opera’s servers compress data by up to 90% before downloading, so page loads don’t take forever.
On the other hand, I find Opera Mini consistently slower than Safari, Dolphin HD, and the others for routine surfing.
Opera Mini features include:
Up to 6 times faster browsing when on slower or crowded networks
Data Savings: Compress up to 90% of data traffic
Speed Dial: Get to your favorite Web sites with a single tap
Visual Tabs: See all your open Web pages and quickly switch between them
Opera Link: Synchronize your bookmarks and Speed Dial with a Desktop PC or other mobile phone.
New in Version 6.5.1
Data usage meter showing how much data you save
Support for predictive typing, including domain suggestions, and auto-correct
Instant bookmarking with a star in the URL field

Calculators And Personal Finance Management
What would we do without calculators? I’m poor at math, and would be lost without a calculator beyond basic arithmetic. Happily, there are several excellent free calculators for the iPad.
___
PCalc Lite Calculator By TLA Systems Ltd.
PCalc Lite is a fully functional and free taste of TLA Systems Ltd’s heavy duty scientific calculator. It includes an optional RPN mode, multiple undo and redo, unit conversions and constants, as well as two stylish themes and the parent app’s highly praised design.
If you like what you see, the full version has many more settings and themes, a paper tape, engineering and scientific notation, and full support for hexadecimal, octal, and binary calculations.
In the continuing absence of demos or trial periods in the App Store, the idea behind PCalc Lite is to provide something useful and free that’s better than the Apple calculator, but which will also drive interest in the full version. PCalc Lite is a great calculator, but PCalc is even better, if you need something more capable.
