Apple Kills Macbook, Soups Up Macbook Air

The Register’s Tony Smith reports that Apple has specced up the MacBook Air line – and killed off the plastic MacBook, and notes that while the new Airs gain Core i5 processors with a 1.8GHz Core i7 also available as a build-to-order option for both the 11″ and 13″ models as well as getting backlit keyboards and Thunderbolt ports too, a disappointment is that the base $999/£849 11.6″ model still ships with just 2GB of memory [and a puny 64 GB SSD Ed.].

Those deficiencies loom larger in importance than they might have, since Apple also quietly snuffed the entry-level white polycarbonate MacBook yesterday, leaving the $999 price point solely occupied by the base MacBook Air.
