Poll: Do You Buy AppleCare?

AppStorm’s David Appleyard says that generally speaking he finds extended warranties and product damage protection policies a total rip-off, but when it comes to Apple products, he tends to have a different opinion, and the two times he’s bought AppleCare he made the most of the extended warranty with repairs or replacements for various parts, noting that while it may look like a solid, magical piece of aluminum, a MacBook is actually a very complicated piece of technology, and things do go wrong, so while AppleCare costs a few hundred extra bucks at the outset, he’s always found it to be a worthwhile investment.

“But do you feel the same way?” he asks.

I don’t. In nearly two decades of buying new and Apple Certified Refurbished Macs, I’ve never purchased AppleCare, and have never had a hardware failure that would have made AppleCare worth the money. Consequently, I’ve saved enough in up-front cost to buy a nice new MacBook Pro should my run of good luck ever peter out. However, your mileage may vary.
