MacBook Air Most Reliable Laptop On The Market
An important point critics of the Apple “price premium” rarely take into account or acknowledge is that materials quality and a high standard of workmanship don’t come cheaply. Oscar Wilde’s observation about knowing the price of everything and the value of nothing comes to mind.
Computerworld’s Gregg Keizer reports that according to a survey of nearly 60,000 American consumers conducted recently by Consumer Reports, Apple’s MacBook Air is the most reliable laptop on the market, with an estimated failure rate of 7 percent within the first three years of ownership. the MacBook Air even beat out its more expensive MacBook Pro sibling which had a failure rate of 9 percent — Apple’s portable PCs having the lowest failure rates overall of any laptop PC manufacturer. Moreover, CU says MacBooks fail at lower rates than Windows laptops, even though the Apple machines are typically used three hours more each week than the overall average for all laptop personal computers.
Keizer says Consumer Reports found the most reliable Windows-powered laptop families, made by Gateway and Samsung, had an estimated 16 percent failure rate in the first three years, while failures in that interval of machines from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo and Toshiba ranged from 18 percent to 19 percent. Somw individual Windows PC laptop models, notably Lenovo ThinkPads and Dell’s XPS portfolio, failed at an estimated rate of 15 percent during their first three years of service, but none of the Windows machines approached matching Apple’s MacBooks’ reliability metrics.
