New iPads and OS X Yosemite Release Coming Oct. 21 – Or Not

The DailyDot’s Micah Singleton reports that Apple is planning to hold its next product announcement event on Oct. 21, at which it will unveil the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 and release a final build of OS X 10.10 Yosemite, which will be available for download immediately after the event. s familiar with the matter.”

That timing would be consistent with the past two years. The iPad 4th generation (AKA iPad with Retina Display) and original iPad mini were unveiled on October 23, 2012, and the iPad Air and iPad mini With Retina Display came almost exactly a year later on October 22, 2013. An October 21, 2014 iPad release will make it a perfect sequential trifecta.

The iPad Air 2 (may or may not be its official name) is widely anticipated ito get Apple’s A8 SoC, an 8 megapixel rear-facing camera, a fingerprint sensor, and possibly a bit of slimming. Scuttlebutt on the 3rd-gen mini is murkier, but my considered guess is that it will likely match its large stablemate on those three points — unless — Apple decides to offer a de-contented mini to counter the onslaught of cheapo Android 7-inchers, a tablet category Microsoft decided to steer clear of by aborting a planned 7-8 inch Surface model.

Then again, perhaps best not to let excitement run away with us. LoopInsight’s Jim Dalyrimple, who is well-connected at Apple and a man of few words, says simply “Nope” regarding a October 21 iPad release.
